Anyone know anything about Rhino Skin Solutions? It looks like their active ingredient is Methenamine which, if I'm not mistaken, degrades into formaldehyde.
Im the owner of Rhino Skin Solutions. Let me answer a few questions you may have. Methenamine is formaldehyde and ammonia fused together. Together they for a very long complicated name that is just easier to call Methenamine. So how does it work. Methenamine is considered a formaldehyde releaser. You are correct that when Methenamine comes in contact with an acidic environment it splits in two creating both ammonia and formaldehyde. So what happens when you do this is it creates a protein plug. Basically what happens to the extent of my knowledge is your sweat glands are proteins and it creates a fold at the top that plugs them. This protein plug sticks around for about three days and then goes away and your hands continue to sweat. Both the ammonia and formaldehyde evaporate off and are not absorbed into the skin.
There are National Institute of Health studies that treated ammonia sensitive patients with 5-8% methenamine solutions. They found that due to the incredibly small amount of formaldehyde introduced to the skin the patience had no allergic reaction to the ingredient. These patience had known allergies to formaldehyde. The NIH in a study including multiple antiperspirants (including ionophorisis) concluded that methenamine is the safest, most effective long term antiperspirant.
I encourage you to google search NIH methenamine. There are also studies with inhalation exposure and direct dermal contact in an industrial setting. Methenamine is also used to control vulcanization of rubber so there were in depth studies on sticking your hands directly in it every day for a long time and breathing it in. The studies show some negative effects but cancer i don't recall is one of them. Skin irritation and difficulty breathing yes.
So dosage numbers. Methenamine is prescribed as an oral antibiotic and can also be found over the counter as Cystex. The dose I think is 4 Grams orally per day. The amount of methenamine in the performance cream is just under that much in the whole bottle. So as you can tell you are really putting quite a small amount of methenamine on your hands.
We feel the product is incredibly safe. But to be clear it is an antiperspirant and can result in very dry hands if used improperly.
