It's being more than 10 years since I lived close to the DC area (southern Maryland to be precise), is Governor's Stable still open to the public on the weekends? Yes, it is open and I think they stopped charging a yearly fee due to donations. Strictly bouldering though. www.mountainproject.com/v/governor-stable/107420019

Lundy- Have you considered trying to find a more local long term project, even if its a crappy route? Personally, I would be more motivated to train with a goal in mind. Also, if you only get a weekend or two in the spring and fall you won't have to learn any new moves each season. Then when you think you can send maybe the Wife will give you an extra hall pass or two?
If your considering this I would contact Eric Horst. Maybe he knows some harder routes that are closer to you then 5-6hrs. I think he did 13c at Safe harbor, maybe its a good route?
I know there was a 5.14 at birdsboro but it might have broken.
Searching mountainproject for 13c or harder in VA and PA shows a few routes with 3hrs of DC. Maybe you have already done this.

Hey all, Thanks for the ton of great ideas. I guess I'd never really put much effort into checking out what was day-trip-able from DC, as I'd been climbing nearly every weekend at the NRG before we had kids. Looks like there's a decent amount out there, including some quite high quality bouldering. So I'll probably stay with the idea of primarily strength and power training, and try to get a few more days out, but just as day trips, to some of the "local" areas, such as Governor's Stable, Mount Gretna, Safe Harbor, and Birdsboro.
Thanks again, all. Appreciate the ideas and support! And for those of you who live near any of those areas (Chris W, among others...), let's definitely connect some day this fall for some sending!

Sounds like a plan to me! It's harder to climb with a wife and kids, but it's still doable. I've been experimenting heavily with climbing with kids for the last two years, and it's getting a bit easier each time. This spring, I took them out more than I ever have.
You should also check out cragmama.com for some ideas. Erica Lineberry is another Trango star whose charism is to climb (and play) outdoors with kids. She has tons of useful ideas and I've had a lot of success implementing them.
Also, if you need any tips, just ask away and I'll be happy to help if I can
