So I went in to the doctor about my strained finger the other day, and she pointed out that I have slight scapula winging and gave me some exercises to reduce it and prevent it from becoming a problem. Naturally I went home and googled the hell out of scapula winging, and am now doing excercises to prevent it. Apparently it can come about through sports that have a lot of over head movement, and if you work out your chest too much (something I used to do in the past, but not any more.
Has anyone had issues with scapula winging? I assume it's probably really closely related to shoulder impingement. The doctor gave me a blue theraband, and I have been doing exercises every day. The 'winging' does cause me any pain, but I've read that it can get worse if you don't address it. The physical therapist I saw today suggested I have tight shoulders and need to stretch them out also.
I figure I need to start putting in more preventative maintenance on my shoulders, or I'm going to pay the price.

Just googled that. Eww, not pretty. I've never heard of that, but seems wise to avoid it I think in general it would be wise for anyone who is a climber to do some type of shoulder prehap exercises. Shoulders are a very common source of complaint, especially as one ages.

I have it in my left shoulder, but it's not as gross as most of the Google images As you suggested, it is linked to shoulder impingement, and I have at times battled with it. Luckily, since I began structured training two years ago, I've only experienced minor flare-ups. I'm doing regular antagonist work to strengthen the scapular stabilizers. If you'd like any details, hit me up. It's definitely best to stay ahead of it!
