Pretty often I end up separating a bit of my fingernail from the underlying nailbed. It's not super serious, but is painful and can make training unpleasant, although not often impossible. I've tried using superglue to bind everything back together, but that usually makes it worse as the glue gets under the nail and splits it further away. Anybody have a solution for this?

Mark, what I've found helpful is to use a bit of bacitracin (or any antibiotic ointment) directly to the site of separation. Cover it with a bit of tape or a band aid and leave it on when you sleep. The antibiotic helps prevent infection and the ointment and bandage keep the raw skin moist while it is healing. This prevents it from drying and shrinking while healing, especially overnight, and then reopening when the site is bent or stressed. I take the bandage off while climbing. Maybe someone else has some ideas.

I've noticed this happens a lot when my finger pads get really dry/tough. I assume this is due to the skin on the pad shrinking as it hardens, combined with the fact that the harder skin is less felxible, so most of the strain of every day life is transferred to the softer skin around the nails. It doesn't help that this skin is then subjected to lots of chalk as a result of regular climbing. My solution is to periodically apply neosporene, lip balm, or some other form of moisturizer to the skin adjacent to the nail. Usually I forget to do this until its too late, but even then it usually heals up in a day or two once I start applying moisturizer.
