In order to maximize strength gains during hang board training, is it better to progress to added weight or smaller holds?

Add weight up to a certain "safe" point and then transition to using smaller holds on the hangboard. After 40 lbs of added weight I decided to transition to smaller holds. This method has worked for me very well. I'm able to hang smaller holds when bouldering.
