This question is from Abby via email:
We both absolutely love to get outside nearly every weekend, and although we are focusing on sport climbing for this fall, we love to spend our weekends in July and August in the mountains doing longer, easier trad climbing. My question is this - in the strength phase, we understand that it is best to have a 2-day rest between the hangboard workouts. However, would it be detrimental if we climbed easy trad both days on the weekends even if that means we would do a hangboard workout on Saturday or Sunday evenings in order to stay with our schedule? We are fully committed to following the program, so if it means we don't get outside both days, that is fine. I do understand that the hangboard routine is best done rested and with solid focus. I guess I'm just curious what you two think about doing easier trad climbing (to mix it up a bit) during this phase.

Abby,
Climbing on your hangboard training days, even if it is easy, will take away from your training. Especially if it involves long days out in the sun, and our long approaches. The best way to incorporate some easy Trad is to do those climbs the day after a hangboard workout, where we have listed optional outdoor mileage workouts in some of the training plans (ie, the Trad climbing plan).
Effective training requires plenty of rest, so if maximum improvement is your highest priority, then ensure you get enough rest.
