I have been wondering if I should let myself go climbing these past weeks. I have boulders within a 10 minute drive of my house. So I would be recreating locally. I also have a fantastic training space to stay sane in, so i've been trying to keep in place because I can. But this afternoon I will probably get out and go climb. Personally, I'd say do it. Just don't post about it lest the self-designated climbing gestapo draw and quarter you.

Ignoring a "second wave," most people will forget about this in a few months and it'll all be back to "normal." Is there a perception that the US is past the 'first wave'? From the outside looking in, it very much looks like the US is still in the thick of the first wave, with case numbers pretty much flat lined and no significant decline yet?

Short answer...no. But our media is doing a great job of only forecasting doom and gloom (standard) so many of us kind of look at the news reports with a twisted glance.
Further, it's very state specific. NY is screwed. Utah is doing pretty well if you look at the numbers as opposed to the media sensationalism.

There's starting to be quite a bit of evidence suggesting that airborne droplets during prolonged indoors proximity, rather than contaminated surfaces (or anything outdoors), are what's really driving most transmission: paperpile.com/shared/gve2Qjwhich makes me hopeful that gyms might be allowed to open with reduced capacities (and mandatory masks) before too long. And also makes me hopeful that outdoors rock climbing will not be restricted very much. But, yeah, I'm sure if you remove the super busy o'clock evening rush of people, that some gyms will go under. And it's hard to imagine such packed crowds of people before we have a vaccine, which is likely a loooooong time out. And just for a slightly more heartwarming counterpoint to the above, my (very large) local gym has made pretty clear over the years that they care more about making a useful space for both beginners and core climbers than they do about extracting a bit of extra cash, and the result is an awful lot of people were offering to keep active memberships before they even asked.
