Heard what sounded like a freshly poured bowl of Rice Krispies and milk coming from the ceiling of the climbing shed last workout. Got around to checking it out today. Gross. The ceiling of this space is "finished" with Dow Super Tuff-R board, instead of drywall or plywood, etc. Tuff-R
Apparently makes a great home for ants...

Looks like carpenter ants. I had a problem with them at my house (one of MANY problems with my house) shortly after I moved in. I had to hire an exterminator. They can cause a lot of structural damage, and they're hard to kill off on your own. One of the issues is that they tend to live inside, within, and outside of the home, and it typically takes close to a year to kill them all off. We had to have 4 treatments done (one per season). The first one, we had to leave the house for several hours, the others (I think) we were allowed to stay home for. You should have seen the critters that (literally) came out of the woodwork after the first treatment. It was bug armageddon.

Not fun, Not even fun to think about. Picked up some of this gel and applied it above the ceiling where they seemed to be concentrated (after vacuuming about 1000 of them up with a shop vac). They were lining up to eat it within seconds. Combat Max
I am also considering spreading some Diatomaceous Earth behind the insulation while I have some down. Never heard of it before, but sounds like it is not too poisonous to humans/pets. Diatomaceous Earth

Yeah, I looked into all those things, but still had to go pro. One of my best climbing partners is an exterminator, and he told me the same thing. The treatments we can do are basically superficial. The ants live in so many places, and often have deep nests in places outside of the involved structure, in my case likely the big oak and maple trees in my yard. If I could have saved a buck on this, I would have, but it was definitely worth the money. to get a pro.
