Does anyone have any good tricks for protecting the back of fingers (right below the cuticle) without taping? A route I'm working involves some ragged granite finger cracks and the tiny cuts I'm getting are turning the route into a bloodbath. I even got blood on my belayer's face! I'd normally use tape, but that will completely cover my pads on the business end, so that's not an option. I used liquid bandage on my last burn of the day, but it may have been too late as the original cuts started bleeding again anyway. Thanks!

The only thing I do is make sure the cuticle isn't stuck to the nail. They make special tools for this (called cuticle pushers I think), but I regularly run the tip of my pocket knife blade (sharp side or blade "up" or towards the skin and away from the nail) under my cuticles. I don't have any real cracks to climb, but if I'm grinding my finger tips into a little pocket or crevice to gain purchase, I can have similar problems.
Hope that post makes sense...

Thanks Chris, that does make sense. Unfortunately the bleeding is coming from an area just a couple of mm below the cuticle. I think I'll try and put a tiny patch of tape on, but I doubt it will still be in place by the time I get to the crack.

Look for some Tincture of Benzoin which you can apply to the skin then tape over that. It glues the tape to your skin so you can use a small square of tape which may ( or may not) hold up to the jambing. Super glue works in a pinch too but can get crusty. Soak hands to soften up the glue/skin to remove.
