Has anyone that doesn't have access to a good gym experimented with unusual ways to ARC and perform PE workouts? I have a pretty limited home gym that I make work, but for a real feel of milage I don't have a great option.
One of the buildings near my work has a back wall with no windows and old-style brick work. I keep looking at it and wondering how it would go as a training wall. The brick and mortar is solid and it is wide enough you could traverse or climb up several feet with out anything hindering. The depth of each edge is pretty uniform and would have to likely be held with an open-hand crimp. It would be pretty boring but you would have tons of options for variable body positions and move difficulty. I'm guessing it would be somewhere between an ARC traverse workout and a PE set as far as workouts go.
The real potential downside I see is that you would mostly be training one grip type and repetitive use might lead to tendonitis more quickly. I'm interested to hear if anyone else has trained on a similar building structure. Also how do you think it would benefit one's overall climbing progress. My goal-routes are mostly on crimpy/edge near-vertical walls.

It probably isn't steep enough for an effective PE workout. To increase intensity you would have to use smaller edges (if they're even available) which may totally shred your skin and, again, making it ineffective. Mark has touched on this in some of the PE forums. Sorry about not having a great place for training If there's any chance you could construct a Moonboard I would highly recommend it. It's great for both power and PE exercices.

Skin would definitely suffer. The edge of these bricks is smaller than the smallest edge on my hangboard - I'm guessing 8mm; my small hangboard edge is 11 mm, I believe. So it would be a pretty thin/small crimp. I was thinking, at the least, it would be a more intense, realistic (outdoor) ARC wall. I'm going to try it out regardless, just to see how it goes.
I could build the frame and wall for a Moonboard, but I'm pretty sure they don't ship the holds to the small African country I currently live in. Maybe I can bring them back from an overseas trip in the future.

It's worth a try! I can't be worse than ARCing on a hangboard (which is what I'm doing).
