during a workout, i progress through max ladders to a set i can do (1-5-8 on half-moon spacing). i've been working 1-5-9; i can sometimes get one hand latched on 9 but not often. this morning i tried doing B1, R5, L8, then L9, then R9 and i was able to pull that off without a lot of difficulty. is there value in progressing that way in my max ladders? or should i just continue to try B1-R5-L9-R9 until i can get it?

Dude... If you're pushing into 1-5-9 on Moon spacing, I would just keep following whatever form of progression you've been doing. It's obviously working quite well for you!

i mentioned in my original post that i'm using half-moon spacing. if only i could attempt 1-5-9 on full moon spacing.

Hard to say if it has "value". I would say it's not the ideal way to train contact strength. It would be a decent way to train lock-off strength in the low arm, and perhaps the pushing motion (in the low hand) that you will need for longer campus moves.
I tend to favor experimentation. If you like doing it, then do it and see how it goes. You're probably going to be doing "1-5-8*" anyway, so if you like, after sticking 8, bump to 9. But, don't let those sets replace attempts at "1-5-9". If you never try "1-5-9", you will never do it.
[*most of us would call that 1-3-4.5, and your 1-5-9 we would call 1-3-5]

I've played with bumps after similar to the way you're describing and like Mark noted, its great to train lock-off strength in the low arm. If you think your lock-off strength is a particular weakness its probably worth throwing a few sets into your routine but if you are just trying to progress to the next level of max ladders i still think its better to just focus on the straight 1-3-5 (or 1-5-9 half moon).

thanks for the responses, Mark and heady. it sounds like i just need to bear down and keep trying.

postscript: over the course of several cycles, i've attempted 1-3-5 close to 50 times and i was able to hit it exactly once. i'm progressing in all other aspects of my training and climbing except for max ladders. it makes me think that maybe i should take a temporary break from them and focus on other ways of building power, at least for a cycle or two. conveniently, my gym installed a moonboard right next to the campus board and i started using it last cycle. i'm looking forward to getting my ass kicked on it more this cycle.
