Does anyone else feel weak starting the power phase? I just completed my first strength phase (10 hb workouts and SE) and thought I had good results. I gained around 30lbs on my crimp and half crimp and gained close to 40 lbs on my MR half pad and open4. I thought I would crush some of my boulder problems in the gym but was falling off after a few moves and the campus board felt much harder than I thought it was going to. What is going on?

Some amount of rusty-ness is pretty normal, but your situation sounds a bit severe. Did you do any other training besides hangboarding?

I was warming up with mobility exercises from the kraft air book , three laps on jugs on my 45* wall and some easy short hangs on the hb which would take about an hour. I would then do 21 sets of repeaters followed by pinch blocks and reverse wrist curls. After that I would do some supplemental exercises like ring muscle ups, lock off laps, different styles of ring pushups and finish with some core. I’ve had pretty substantial gains in all of my SE as well as my hangboard so it seems weird that I was so weak. Do you think not arcing has anything to do with it? Maybe I wasn’t resting long enough in between burns on my wbl and just got flash pumped or something?? It was as if my fingers weren’t functioning properly such as grabbing a hold open handed and trying to turn it into a crimp.

If you only had one disappointing session after your power phase, I'd be a little more patient. I certainly have had random bad days for reasons unknown... stress, biorhythms, etc.
It's easy to conclude crazy things from one workout sometimes... but I'd look at your overall change in performance over the next 2-3 weeks. If you are just weaker in general, then it might be time to change something up.

Ok, it sounds like you didn’t neglect anything important. I would just give it a couple more workouts and see how it goes. Often my first workout after a HB phase is shit.

Thanks guys! I’ll try a few more workouts and see what happens. I was just expecting everything to feel casual after all those brutal hb sessions!

Personally I find a long repeaters cycle to really sap my strength and power (I'm speaking as a boulderer here). Repeaters obviously make you "stronger," but its a different sort of strength than campusing-type strength, as the RCTM points out. I haven't experimented too much yet with maintenance work during a strength phase (i.e. doing 1 campus or LB or max hang sesh a week to maintain pure recruitment-type strength), so it may be possible to maintain more explosive power than I have been. On the bright side I find my campus and max hang numbers improve very quickly once I switch back to those exercises. Curious to hear how your cycle went!

Stay the course, you gotta get those new big dumb muscles to fire. And they will, proabaly better then ever.
2-5 sessions and it should come back.

Definitely feeling super weak after strength phase, I was strict on following the workouts to the tee, 20 min arc then hangboard repeaters usually after driving home from the gym.
I just got done with 1 campus workout and 1 limit workout.
I obviously wasn't expecting to hit the max ladder I had from last cycle on the first campus workout. Also feeling weak bouldering. I'm just going to be patient and give it another week

I’d like to add that this is my first time on the program but I had the same experience. First two power sessions I felt strong but it was like I forgot how to climb. Today was my second campus session and things are feeling smoother.
It makes sense that you will be a little rusty after doing not much more than hanging off your fingers for three weeks.

For what it's worth, I've found that, the more experience I gain, the easier it has been for me to transition from the strength to the power phase. I've been doing the Rock Prodigy training now for 4 (?) years and have some benchmark problems on my wall. I keep hitting my benchmark problems and new/former limit problems quicker with each season. Not sure if anyone else has had the same experience or not.

I had the same experience the first couple of strength cycles I went through. I was surprised at how bad the power cycle started but by the end they were generally very successful. Now I add in more supplemental climbing in the strength phase (easy ARCing, really easy bouldering or some easy trad days) and that has really eased the transition.
