Most people are familiar with Power Lifting, Olympic Lifting, Strongman, Arm Wrestling etc but there is a little known sport called Grip Sport which I have participated in for over a decade. Different events are contested which test the various aspects of forearm – wrist – hand and finger strength in about any direction one can move. It’s much different than climbing of course but the training done by these competitors might have value for us and the training theories used most certainly may. Arguably the strongest hands in the world in gross terms (not relative to bodyweight) are hanging from these people. Some of these guys (like myself) started this as a way to train for climbing while living in an area removed from any real climbing areas during the winter and found our climbing backgrounds gave us an edge. It is a weight class sport so big and small guys can have a fair shot to do well.
The reason I bring this up here is that I am holding a competition December 10th at 10am here in my gym. This is aimed at anyone interested but primarily at Ted and his Athens friends who live only an hour away. This is an invite to attend – watch – and talk to everyone. There will be some very strong and knowledgeable people there from the world of hand strength – a few World Record holders in Grip sport events will be present –several rock climbers among us - and I thought it might be fun for people with a strong interest in hand strength (even if not specific to climbing) to come and watch. Admission is free. These guys have studied climbers for a long time to learn more – maybe climbers studying them could have value in reverse.
If interested just contact me on here and I will give directions etc. I can also give a few resources - websites etc if there is any interest to reading more about it.
An example of what we do. Take 2 45# weight plates and put them together smooth sides out. Put a pipe through the hole and start adding more weight plates on either side - add until you can no longer lift it (we have an actual apparatus designed for it). Now pinch the smooth part of the 45# plates and lift the whole thing up off the floor - that's what is called a Two Hand Pinch event. 275# is the World Record done by Kody Burns at a bodyweight of 190#. He can easily hang from the pinch holds on my RCTM hangboard - hand walk the Campus rungs etc. We don't start there of course - we start around 60# and gradually go up to peoples best lifts.
