Off topic - sorry. Yeh, I hear what you're saying, it is difficult to control for so many variables, but this is the nature of real world research. There is generally an acknowledgement that this type of research is not perfect but it is scientific. Alternatively by controlling variables are you skewing results. A good researcher will clearly present all findings positive and negative plus highlight strengths and weaknesses within the research design. It is up to the reader to decide if the research is worthy and how to take the information to their own situation. Sometimes case studies can provide more information than rct's. Certainly for elite performers who are far from average in their lives a narrative document would be far more revealing than them being an outlyer on a graph.
