I found this article fairly interesting. It seems to me like at most only one of the four panel members was a sport climber. I think there is a big difference in how sport climbers approach climbing versus other groups. We often tend to be more OCD, analytical, and general concerned about health/nutrition, fitness and training.
Anyway, to whatever extent I am a role model, I feel compelled to share that I do not smoke weed. I rarely drink, but that is strictly for weight management reasons--I do occasionally drink out of season. I try not to be judgmental though. I have many good friends who have/do partake, and I've climbed with many good-ish climbers who do, including one guy who was pretty much non-functional when sober. I voted for legalization in CO because I'm basically a libertarian and feel that adults should be able to make their own choices, even if it's a choice I would not make for myself.
I think there is an impression among those who use that "everybody's doing it", so the purpose of my post is to say: that's not the case, and it's certainly not necessary to climb well. I know that at least one "friend of the show" 5.15 crusher has told me he doesn't use it (and I believe him). I think it would have been nice if Climbing tallied the number of folks who said they don't use it, instead of provide the misleading impression that 100% of the sample size smokes weed.

Yeah I saw this and agree it was interesting. Thanks for your comments Mark, good to hear. Agree with your points re: the biased sample; it would have been nice to maybe see some stats on how many use vs. How many do not.
Even though all used or had used, I thought the general pattern revealing itself in results was that they believed it had a negative overall effect on performance, except for one person.

Definitely an interesting conversation to have within the climbing community. I'm interested to hear more perspectives on it.

Not for me. I don't smoke it. I drink a couple of beers once a week or two, never more than a couple of beers in a session. I have a fast paced job and am trying to improve my climbing performance on the side, my body just doesn't have time to recover from partying. From younger experience, I was always cloudy headed after smoking, and my co-ordination for intense motor skills would always be hampered in the days following. Climbing hard is my buzz!
My political position is also similar to yours, adults should be left to make their own decisions, at least on weed. Each to their own...
