Building my first campus board. 15 degrees. 84" of useable height. 36" wide. Going to start with two sizes of rings (large and medium).
Now to the simple question. Is it really necessary to use 2 sheets of 3/4" plywood. Flat-ass broke and don't really want to fork out cash for more plywood! Of course if you say that I'll definitely pull a rung, I'll have to spring for another sheet. Any advice appreciated!

I made mine with one thickness of 3/4" plywood but I did go with 7 ply instead of 5. It's going on 3 years old now and most of us who use it are 200# or better. No problems so far.

I'm certain that two sheets is better than one. My campus board, however, is made with only one sheet. I've never pulled a rung or even had one loose.
FYI, my board is a full 48" wide. When I started I could barely do large rungs, but I progressed to small rungs much more quickly than I would have guessed. If you're able, it could be really nice to have space for all three rung sizes. I still use my large rungs to warm up my creaky bones.

Thanks. I'm pushing 165lbs., so it sound as if 1-3/4 sheet should suffice. I hear ya on 3-sizes of rings, but that's all that room would allow. I'm thinking at some point I could switch out the large rings to small....but that could be a ways down the road.

I used one full sheet, but then I put some thin strips of scrap wood behind that sheet so the rungs were screwed through the full sheet and the scrap. It costs nothing but makes it a bit more tedious to install the rungs. It sounds like one sheet is good enough though.

Plywood isn't all the same. The very cheap stuff is cheap for a reason - has voids etc that are not always filled or filled poorly and lower quality overall. Buy a better grade and it will make a big difference in strength. More plys (layers) is better.
Another thing is to buy the right screws for the job - make sure you have threads (not the shoulder (the smooth part)) where the screw is in the plywood and rung.

I use only a single sheet of ACX 3/4" for my first campus board and it worked great. I max out at around 155 so I'm not too heavy. I had to take it down when I moved into my new place but when I reinstall it I will probably throw a sheet of 1/2" behind the 3/4 so the screws can bite into new wood and not just use the same holes.
