It seems that current thinking is shifting away from traditional block periodization to a hybrid approach. Lots of smart folks (Bechtel, Horst, and the Anderson Bro’s) have mentioned the idea of still maintaining a traditional strength and power phase but during the PE/Performance phases shifting to non-linear periodization. Horst’s new energy systems work advocates for high level athletes to split up the NLP work into two a day sessions (e.g. strength in the morning, power/PE work in evening) so long as they are separated by 6-7 hours of rest.
I am curious what others who have experimented with NLP during the PE/Performance phase think of this? For example, I wonder if the mega sessions Mark described in his recent shadowboxing article might have achieved greater adaptations/maintenance if they were divided into two sessions during the day?
Clearly you must have tons of time available to train for this. Finding enough time aside, this is a new approach being proposed with potentially interesting implications for the PE/Performance phase that has received little attention to date.
