So my wife and I have decided we're going to finish out our stint in the US middle of next year, and go back to Australia. In between we're planning to travel through South America and Africa for 4 months or so, just backpacking and climbing.
Wondering what everyone's thoughts are on training in the lead up to such a trip, and then maintaining strength etc. during the trip. There will be plenty of climbing, but also plenty of sightseeing and hiking.
Here is how I envision the trip will typically look;
Week 1 - Full week at single crag - projecting Week 2 - Travelling to different cities, on buses, flights etc. Week 3 - 3 days at a single crag, rest of time visiting sights. Week 4 - 7 day hike at altitude Week 5 - Travelling, sightseeing, in transit - maybe a single day or two at a local crag or climbing gym. Week 6 - 5 days at a single crag - projecting
My thinking is to plan a cycle that would lead up to me peaking for performance at the beginning of the trip. I've negotiated with the wife to get about 3 or 4 week long stays at particular crags, so that I can project during those weeks.
During the non-project times, we'll either be hiking or sightseeing. I figure that the hikes will probably sub pretty well for base fitness, so during the other times my focus would be on strength, power, and power endurance - focusing on the physiology that matters the most for the next crag I'm going to project at. I'll probably get one of those portable hangboards to take with us, as I think finger strength will probably be the hardest to train while we're on the road.
Any thoughts as to how to plan the cycle around such a trip?
