I feel like I've been very successful in my first hangboard phase of dialing in baseline weights and steadily improving on them. However, I'm trying to do semi-closed on the metolius simulator 18mm edge and it feels like there is so much depth that it is hard to make the grip consistent each hang. Sometimes the callous under my first joint catches on different fingers, sometimes my pointer finger naturally tries to go into half crimp, and sometimes I grip it only to find that one hand is doing one of those, but the other is doing the opposite.
When I walk up and naturally semi-closed grip the 14mm simulator edge it naturally goes into perfect semi-closed grip. It seems like the 18mm is the standard for this grip and most people favor more weight, but is there any reason not to drop down to the 14mm and reduce the weight?
Has anyone else experienced a difficulty keeping the consistency? Am I just being a complete noob?
This is especially maddening because it seems like this is the grip that people have the least trouble with!

Sand down the callouses so they don't catch badly on the edges and tear a large flapper. I've had to tweak grips and positions and sizes of edges and weights to keep a grip consistent. Don't feel too bad about it. Take your time and figure out what is best for you without worrying too much about what other folks are doing.
