My gym has one of these rope climbing machines (https://www.motionfitness.com/Viper-Rope-Climber-250-p/viper-250.htm). Does it have any place during an aerobic phase, or is it too non-specific to benefit climbing?

Too non-specific. It will emphasize the larger pulling muscles (biceps, lats, brachioradialis) with less of an emphasis on forearm endurance. Even if the forearms became the limiting factor in that exercise, the grip position is so different that I'm not sure how much translation there would be over to real rock.
Also, you would get absolutely none of the technique improvement that comes with long ARC sets.

I would agree. Doubt it would translate to climbing improvement. When I was in high school and college, I had phenomenal pulling endurance as a flatwater sprint kayaker. On one of our summer tours, we stopped at an REI store to goof off. I tried the climbing wall, sure it would be a piece of cake. I was shocked that I pumped off half way up.
