When we moved out of our last rental and I had to tear down the "CTC" (my freestanding outdoor training space) I was not sure if I would be able to build anything quite as good as it. But as soon as I stepped into the garage of the home we ended up buying and saw its 10.5' ceilings my wife and I knew we could make something special. Now that its essentially done, welcome to Purgatory!
In the Catholic tradition purgatory is a place where our "imperfections" are purged of us before we enter heaven. My version purgatory is the place were my climbing imperfections are purged before I enter the various climbing heavens we visit (Smith, Wild Iris, Red Rocks)
The Center Piece of purgatory is the "tension board" which you can find a review of here. I am loving this more each day that I use it. If I was only to have one element of my home gym this would be it for sure!
The 20 degree wall has been really useful especially since I scabbed in the awkwardly fitting in transition section. It has allowed ARC workouts and for me to set problems and LBCs with route specific moves more easily than I can on the TB. I currently have a circuit that ends with some simulator moves for a project route I have at Smith. I was worried the scabbed corner would be too easy to stem in but it is incredibly shallow and if I restrict myself to the no shadow tip toe feet it can really be desperate to use. I did not take the corner to the floor because I wanted easy access to the area behind the walls and there is the perfect amount of space for my bike repair stand which is nice because it keeps that clutter mostly out of sight.
Essential, Enough said!
Practically speaking this is the least used and least necessary feature but since it have been a year and a half since I have campused I am really glad to have it back. Its built on moon spacing and if needed I can take one of the "half" steps and move it to the bottom to have 1-9. I have found that those little tabs of blue tape are better for knowing where to throw to than if the rungs were numbered. I was worried it would not be solid enough but this thing is really stout!
Best part about this setup is that I can still park a car in here! I have a large list that will make this space better which includes, new siding on the garage, insulation, better less noisy lights, a big heater, white boards for writing down workouts, wifi boasters, etc. but for now all I really need is a nice pair of warm fuzzy slippers to slide my feet into between burns. Really the only thing that could make this space better is a higher ceiling to allow me to build a adjustable angle tension board and have longer problems on the 20. If you ever in Leavenworth and want to spend some time in purgatory just let me know.
